What is OPT?

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a period of temporary employment authorization granted to F-1 students who have completed or are pursuing a degree at an accredited US college or university. It allows you to work in the US in a job directly related to your field of study. Initial OPT provides up to 12 months of work authorization after graduation; STEM OPT extension adds up to 24 additional months for qualifying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics graduates.

To get OPT work authorization, your Designated School Official (DSO) must first authorize OPT in your SEVIS record. Then you file Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization) with USCIS. For initial OPT (category code C03A), the filing window opens 90 days before your program end date and closes 60 days after it. USCIS issues an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) card. You may start working on or after the start date printed on the card.

One thing many F-1 students miss: the 12-month OPT clock runs regardless of whether you have a job. You can be unemployed for up to 90 cumulative days during initial OPT (150 days during a STEM extension) before your F-1 status is at risk. This is why knowing exactly where your I-765 stands matters. A delayed card can eat into your unemployment buffer before your start date.

Typical I-765 OPT timeline

Typical processing time: No universal GreenLight estimate. Use the official USCIS processing-time selector for the exact eligibility category and office.

1
Application filed

USCIS receives your I-765. If filed concurrently with I-485, it shares the same receipt date and is processed together.

Receipt timing varies; follow your USCIS account and mailed notice
2
Biometrics (if not concurrent with I-485)

USCIS may schedule a biometrics appointment or reuse biometrics, depending on the filing and current instructions. Follow the appointment notice if one is issued.

The appointment notice controls; there is no universal filing-to-biometrics clock
3
Card production ordered

USCIS approves your application and orders the physical EAD card to be produced and mailed.

Use the official USCIS selector for the exact eligibility category and office
4
Card delivered

USCIS mails the EAD after production. For affected category (c)(9) initial and renewal requests pending or filed on or after Dec. 5, 2025, the maximum validity is 18 months; the printed card controls.

Follow USCIS production and mailing updates

Frequently asked questions about OPT

How long does I-765 take?+
GreenLight does not publish a hand-authored I-765 range. Use the official USCIS processing-time selector for the exact eligibility category and office; a concurrent I-485 does not create one universal I-765 clock.
Can I expedite my EAD?+
Yes, but only under specific criteria: severe financial loss to you or your employer, emergencies or humanitarian reasons, USCIS error that caused the delay, or cases involving nonprofit organizations or U.S. government interests. Submit an expedite request through your USCIS online account and provide supporting documentation.
What is category (c)(9) on my EAD?+
Category (c)(9) means your EAD was issued because you have a pending I-485 (Adjustment of Status) application. It is the most common EAD category. The (c)(9) EAD allows you to work for any employer in the U.S. without restriction.
What happens if my EAD expires before my renewal is approved?+
Most renewals filed on or after Oct. 30, 2025 do not receive a general automatic extension. A qualifying renewal filed before that date may retain up to 540 days only if it was timely, used an eligible matching category, and satisfies every document condition. Other category-specific extensions follow their own rules.
Can I work before receiving my EAD card?+
No. You may not begin work until you physically have the card in hand. The approval notice alone is not sufficient. If your employer uses E-Verify, you must present the physical card.

Next step: H-1B
After OPT, most F-1 graduates pursue an H-1B petition. Track your I-129 case the same way.
